Yummy Weirdness

I always make cookies for Manly's lunches.

I was bored of the typical Peanut Butter Cookies, Brownies and Chocolate Chip.

So,hopped on the Internet for something a little unique, and I found it in these cookies.

They are not as weird as they sound and I urge you to try them before judging them too harshly.

I didn't even get a chance to take a picture of them, that's how quickly they were devoured.

Chocolate Pepper Cookies

1 1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teas. baking powder

1/4 teas. salt

3/4 teas. cinnamon

1/4 teas. allspice

1/4 teas. ground pepper

pinch of cayenne

3/4 cup of Dutch Cocoa

3/4 cup of butter

1 1/2 teas. vanilla

1 cup of sugar

1 egg

Sift the dry ingredients together.

Cream butter, add vanilla and sugar and beat till smooth.

Add egg and combine.

Slowly add dry ingredients, mix till just combined.

Form logs and chill till firm.

Slice dough in 1/4 inch slices and place on parchment sheet lined cookie sheets.

Bake at 375 for about 9 minutes.

Let rest on sheet for about 2 minutes and then place on cooling rack.

Your overall taste is definitely chocolate, there is just a bit of spicyness that lingers on your tongue.

The Cookie reminds of a Mexican recipe, for they use a lot of chocolate along with spice.

Try them and let me know what you think.

Have a great Wednesday!

~A day in the Mountains~

Last weekend, Manly took me on a day trip to the Mountains.

He knew that with Harvest coming up, the next time we would be able to get away is when snowflakes would be falling.

Before we reached the mountains we found this abandoned farm.
The house was still in fair shape, although small critters had moved in and all the windows were broken.

The Aspens are starting to turn their autumn colors, they are so pretty mixed in with the pines.

While we were in the mountains, we found another abandoned home.
This adorable little cabin.
Whoever lived there either thought when they left they would be back soon or had left in a hurry.
The apron was hanging on its hook by the stove, tablecloth set nicely on the table and dish soap by the sink.
Everything was covered in about an inch of dust.
My heart ached to clean the place up and make it feel loved again.
The outhouse at least had a family of Pack Rats living in it......

As Promised.....

Okay,so here is one of my new features on my blog.
Country bedrooms.
But,as you can tell from the pictures, lines got a little fuzzy and crossed over into some of my other features (Kitchens and Porches)
I love the Yellow Bedroom and the Southern Sleeping Porch is such a neat and beautiful idea (maybe our very own Southern Girl who now lives in Idaho has some comments on Sleeping Porches????)
Now the Kitchen with a Bedroom (or is it a bedroom with a kitchen??) is just strange.
Its a lovely room, decoration wise, and there are times where I will be in the kitchen and be quite tired, however , not sure I am ready to put a bed in my kitchen yet.
Hopefully, next time this feature will just have bedrooms, but I guess old habits are hard to break.
Have a great day!

Inspired?

Fall is upon us.
We are all thinking about breaking out the needles and yarn.
If you are like me, you have been looking at patterns and thinking of what projects you would like to start.
Maybe you are looking for something unique, something out of the ordinary.
A project that will make a statement, a big statement.
Well, then you would knit or crochet a afghan for your community's water tower, right?
That's what these ladies did.

All the yarn is Lion Brand Yarn.
Let me know if any of you feel compelled to cover something large with a homemade blanket.....

Alaskan Sourdough Bread

Since I started my sourdough I have experimented with a few different recipes.

Here is my favorite bread recipe so far.

Alaskan Sourdough Bread

1 cup of Sourdough Starter

2 1/2 cups warm water

4 tbsp. melted lard (or butter or bacon fat)

1/2 cup sugar

1 tbsp. dry yeast

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tbsp. salt

8 cups flour (approx.)

Combine ingredients, adding flour gradually, and knead until smooth.

Place in greased bowl in a warm place and let rise.

When double (about 1 hour to an hour and a half)

knead down again and once more let rise till its about doubled in size.

Shape into loaves and bake at 375 for about 40-50 minutes or until done.

This bread might not rise as high as some homemade bread.

But,it creates a hardy, dense loaf that has a unique flavor and a nice crust.
